How Waterfront Chiropractic is different
A better approach to healing
"Healing for living" is more than just a slogan or a catch phrase to us. It's a simple yet powerful way to express our aspirations for our patients. True healing should bring much more than the return of a particular physical ability. It should return a sense of fullness and purpose to life.
So how do we achieve true healing? Very differently compared to most chiropractic organizations. Yes, we use many well-established chiropractic methods and leading-edge technology to help the body's own natural healing process, but our approach is more focused, more thorough, more scientific--and more personal. Our method serves to, first and foremost, accurately identify and isolate the cause of a problem and provide highly specific adjustments to promote healing. In some cases, we may only need to adjust one vertebra in one direction. But determining that course of care is where the real discovery--and work--takes place.

Seeing the whole to pinpoint the cause
At Waterfront, we look at the spine as a building, the foundation being the pelvis and the rest of the spine being the floors above. Instead of narrowing in on the apparent cause(s) of a particular physical problem, we look at the spine in its totality. Because the spine is a structure that bears the load of your torso--like a building-- we work as an architect or engineer would do. Working from the foundation towards the top, we first identify and distinguish true subluxations (the spinal misalignments that cause interference between the brain and the body) from compensations (vertebral misalignments further up the spine that react to subluxations, which very often lead to symptoms). Without this understanding many patients problems will not be able to be stabilized or corrected.
If the foundation is in a state of imbalance, the problems above cannot be corrected. For example, if a patient has a problem in the neck and a misalignment in the pelvis, even without low back pain, the pelvis needs to be corrected in order for the neck to heal or the problem will not be solved or stabilized.
In our approach it's also critical to take neurophysiology into account when determining the cause of a problem. Your nervous system is divided between the parasympathetic system, which calms, and sympathetic system, which stimulates. Each is located on different parts of the spine. Because the two systems can counteract each other, it';s important to know how the two interact.
For instance, if a person is having trouble sleeping, the chiropractor normally shouldn't perform adjustments in the sympathetic area. The chiropractor needs to know when--and when not--to combine adjustments of the two areas.

Imaging is more than meets the eye
Medical doctors and other chiropractors use imaging primarily to determine the pathology (a breakdown of the physical structure like fractures, degenerative disease, tumors, loss of spinal curve etc.) but its use does not influence actual care. To know how to make the most specific scientific adjustment, at Waterfront Chiropractic, we can use imaging (for instance, X-rays) to not only help to identify pathology but to analyze and measure specific biomechanical misalignments. Our expertise in interpreting and extrapolating imaging information can go long way to identifying the cause of an ailment.

Not just treating you, changing you
Healing is about changing your body for the better. Our goal is to enable you to permanently improve your health, so we incorporate therapeutic exercises (ASBE and Mirror Imaging Maneuvers) that not only help to "hold" our specific therapeutic adjustments but also help to correct abnormal spinal curvatures such as scoliosis, loss of neck curve, low back curve, and kyphosis. We also use extension compression traction, which preserves the spinal curve and provides long-term benefits as opposed to axial traction, used by most other practitioners, which only provides short-term relief and can damage the spinal curve. Or goal is to not only make the patient feel better but to show a measurable difference in the spinal curve before a wellness or maintenance program begins.

Health for healing
Just as important as our approach to treating the spine and nervous system is the emphasis we place on a comprehensive approach to healthy living--mind and body alike. And because the mind and body are inextricably linked, they must work in harmony. Nutritional guidance and consultation on exercise and general healthy living habits are all offered at Waterfront Chiropractic. In fact, this is the very essence of effective chiropractic--as well as a key to the richest life possible.
